Jan Decleir finds his portrayal of the character Dreverhaven in the book adaptation of Karakter, his most beautiful contribution to Dutch film. Director Mike van Diem received an Oscar for the film in the Best Foreign Film category in 1998. The Belgian actor remembers Van Diem in an interview in the VARA Guide as "a stubborn, yet very gentle man", with whom he worked intensively.
