This coming weekend the shoot of the new AVROTROS drama series The Year of Fortuyn will start. The focus is on the election battle in 2002, between the flamboyant newcomer Pim Fortuyn (Jeroen Spitzenberger) and PvdA party leader Ad Melkert (Ramsey Nasr), intended successor to Prime Minister Wim Kok. The series shows how Fortuyn's rise caused emotions to run high not only in The Hague, but also in the country. In a period of less than a year, between the attacks of 9/11 and the murder of Fortuyn, we see how the political landscape in the Netherlands would change forever.
