Mother Suriname, the documentary directed by Tessa Leuwsha and based on her family history, attracted 10,000 cinemagoers. The director, who lives in Suriname, received the Crystal Film Award for this achievement. The documentary uses archival footage of Suriname from the abolition of slavery in 1863 to independence in 1975 and tells the story of a Surinamese washerwoman. The Crystal Film award was presented for the fourth time this year.
