Pieter-Jan De Pue spent nine years in Ukraine making *Mariinka*, a 16mm documentary premiering as the opening film of CPH:DOX. The film follows six young people from the Donbas region, including two brothers fighting on opposite sides of the front, a boxer turned paramedic, and a smuggler transporting goods across the front lines. De Pue learned Russian to gain his characters' trust, while the war dictated his shooting schedule, spending six to eight months a year in Ukraine. *Mariinka* is produced by Savage Film.
