European scripted TV production has shown a downward trend since 2023 following growth that peaked in 2022, with both the number of episodes per season and individual episode length declining significantly, according to the European Audiovisual Observatory. Notably, streamers in Europe have continued to invest more than in the US, where the decline was sharper. Synnøve Hørsdal of Maipo Film notes that the standard season format has shrunk from thirteen to six episodes, while Robert Franke of Intaglio Films attributes this development to two factors: the end of venture capital-driven streaming growth following COVID and the pressure of the creator economy on traditional TV producers.
