A coalition of European broadcasters and media companies, united in ACT with members such as Canal+, RTL, Mediaset, ITV, Paramount+, NBCUniversal, Walt Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Sky, and TF1 Groupe, has asked the European Commission to classify smart TV operating systems and virtual assistants as "gatekeepers" under the Digital Markets Act. Android TV grew from 16% to 23% market share between 2019 and 2024, while Amazon's Fire OS rose from 5% to 12% and Samsung's Tizen OS currently holds approximately 24%, allowing technology companies to gain an increasing grip on content distribution and audience access. The broadcasters also advocate for the regulation of voice-controlled assistants such as Alexa and Siri, as the lack of DMA obligations for these services creates a regulatory vacuum.
