Thierry Frémaux, directeur van het Filmfestival van Cannes, over het verleden en de toekomst van films'
Thierry Frémaux, director of both the Cannes Film Festival and the Lumière Institute in Lyon, recently released *Lumière, Le Cinema!*, an essayistic film about the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière that combines approximately 100 early short films with his own voiceover reflections. Frémaux argues that the power of the Lumière work lies in its simplicity, where the shot forms the fundamental language of cinema. He draws a parallel between Edison's individual kinetoscope and contemporary streaming platforms like Netflix, which he views as Edison's legacy in contrast to Lumière's collective cinematic ideal, while emphasizing that cinema as an art form will survive as long as artists continue to create for the big screen.
