During day two of the Cannes Marché du Film, Eleanor Whitley of Marshmallow Laser Feast, Caspar Sonnen of IDFA, and Paul Bouchard of Diversion debated the distribution of immersive documentaries, with the panel moderated by Mathieu Gayet. Sonnen, who founded DocLab in 2007, rejected the separation between fiction and non-fiction by citing Werner Herzog's statement that everything is simply cinema, while preferring the term "perception art." Bouchard pointed out the dangers of educational use as this can impose certain versions of history, and all three concluded that transparency regarding creative intent is more important than genre labels.
