When I drove from the Netherlands to Portugal in a fully packed car full of household goods in 2011, I couldn't wait to step out of the Dutch culture and into the Portuguese ambiance. Away from my Rotterdam life, looking for a new challenge in Lisbon.
It turned out differently than I initially thought. Soon I was offered a job as a teacher of Dutch. My Portuguese students wanted to learn 'my' language and get to know Dutch culture. Some of them with the aim of moving to my mother country for work or study. And that while I had just left. They taught me to appreciate my country, culture and language again. At the beginning of 2012, we took up the idea of setting up a Dutch-language film festival. And I always say - with a wink - that this idea has gotten a little out of hand.
I am now proud to speak of Cinema Bioscoop as an international organization with events in Lisbon, London, Brussels and there are plans and contacts with other cities! At each location I get the chance to work with local partners and employees.
And I? I have found Rotterdam as an inspiring home base again.
